Commencement ceremonies for the high school class of 2021 may have more pomp as circumstances permit this spring. Erie area schools plan to honor graduates in person. And even proms, class trips, baccalaureate services and other senior-centric events may happen, contingent on COVID-19 case numbers and Erie County Department of Health approval. Graduation won t be 2,000 people plus faculty and staff at the Bayfront Convention Center, but it may be more traditional than last year, said James Vieira, dean of Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy in Erie. The class of 2021 will be the second class to graduate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Commencements last year were virtual, in-person for small groups at a time, or both. Plans for 2021 in-person events are still works in progress because state health and education department guidelines are le to change.

In the weeks before he retired as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Cambridge Springs in late 2014, Erie County Councilman Brian Shank, who is now a Republican candidate for sheriff, faced allegations of misconduct that would later become part of a civil lawsuit against one of his peers.  In sworn depositions, Shank admitted to some of the allegations lodged against him by female inmates, including hitting inmates on the buttocks with a ruler on one occasion and intentionally discussing bacon in front of a Muslim inmate, which he said was part of a running joke between he and the woman.

Editor s note: This story has been corrected to clarify Millcreek School Board s position on renovation funding and has been updated to include the latest school district votes on the Erie County Technical School renovations resolution. The Millcreek Township School District is standing alone in its fight to change the way that local school districts pay for improvements to the Erie County Technical School. Ten of the 11 Erie County school districts that send students to the technical school have voted to move forward with the school s planned $27,775,000 renovation project and to pay their share of that cost based on the current funding agreement.
